Track and Field Win Eight Events and Tie Two School Records at the Ted Nelson Classic

MANKATO, Minn. - The Augustana track and field team took first in eight events at the Ted Nelson Classic in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday. Two Vikings also tied school records at the meet at the Myers Field House.

Anthony Huber set the tone early for the Vikings with a top finish in the first event of the meet. Huber recorded a personal best and tied the school record in the weight throw with a mark of 19.04-meters with is the 11th best mark in Division II. Huber tied former Viking and current Minnesota Viking CJ Ham's school record set in 2015. Huber also took third in the shot put with a mark of 16.64-meters.

"Huber tied CJ Ham's school record in the weight throw, give him an NFL contract," assistant coach Greg Binstock said of Huber's performance.

Valerie Gildemaster led the way in the 60-meter hurdles with a first place finish in the finals. Gildemaster set a personal best in the semifinals with a time of 8.69, which ranks 13th in Division II. Selin Dikmen took seventh in the finals with a time of 9.19. In the men's finals Paul Meloche took fourth and Dylon Van't Hof finished in seventh.

Callie DeWitt tied her own school record of 7.70 in the 60-meter dash during the prelims. DeWitt went on to finish in second in the finals and Alaina Klapperich took sixth. DeWitt also took the top spot in the long jump with a personal best mark of 5.54-meters. Sarah Westerman also recorded a personal record mark in the long jump with a mark of 5.19-meters, good for a seventh place finish.

A pair of Vikings swept the 600-meters. Emma Schmidt won the women's race with a time of 1:41.74, which Avery Selberg taking second in the race. In the men's race, Josh Barrows finished on top with a time of 1:20.97 and Austin Krohnke took seventh with a personal best time of 1:24.37. In the women's 800-meters, Emily Tromp finished in first with a time of 2:17.11.

Carly Rahn kept up her successful freshman season with a top finish in the 1000-meters. Rahn raced to a time of 2:57.50 and Cassidy Soli took fifth in the race with a personal best time of 3:03.92. Zach Tuschen took third in the men's race with a time of 2:30.92.

In the women's 4x400-meter relay, the Augustana team of Sydney Mudgett, Tromp, Gildemaster and Schmidt took first with a time of 3:56.93 which is a season's best time for the Vikings. The men's team of Blake Savey, Ryan Stiles, Austin Miller and Barrows took fourth.

In other distance races, Tromp and Soli recorded top-four and personal best finishes in the mile. Tromp raced to a time of 5:06.55 and took second and Soli finished in fourth with a time of 5:08.27. In the men's race, Wyatt McLeod took second with a personal best time of 4:16.46 and Miller finished in fifth. In the women's 3000-meters, four Vikings placed in the top-nine. Mackenzie Kelly led the way with a second place finish, followed by Alana Sesow (fourth), Paige Sunstrom (eighth) and Claire Boersma (ninth). In the men's race, Logan Burns took sixth and Aaron Runge finished in eighth.

In the 400-meters, Stiles and Mudgett earned personal records. In the men's race, Stiles took fourth with a time of 50.63. In the women's race, Mudgett finished in sixth with a time of 1:00.28.

In other field events, Kendra Ludeman finished in sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.58-meters. In the men's high jump, Eli Anderson took eighth with a mark of 1.89-meters. Matt Pohlmann set a personal best mark of 4.42-meters in the pole vault, good for an eighth place finish.

Augustana will make a third appearance in Brookings, S.D. for the SDSU Classic on Feb. 9 and 10. Also next week will be the first leg of the NSIC Indoor Championships with the NSIC Multi-Events in Mankato, Minn. on Feb. 11 and 12.
