Game Recap: Softball |

Vikings and Rangers Split a Pair of One-Run Games

CANYON, Texas – A 16-7 win over Regis on Friday gave the Augustana softball team its first win of the season, but the Rangers fired back on Saturday with a 5-4, 8 inning win in the first game of a doubleheader, only to see the Vikings bounce back with a 4-3, come-from-behind win in the nightcap.

Augustana returns home with a 2-4 record, while the Rangers end the day with a1-3 mark.

The day got off to a bit of a rough start, as the Rangers opened with a pair of runs in the first inning, a lead that would hold until the bottom of the fourth, when the Vikings finally broke through.

Shannon Petersen opened the fourth with a single, and then scored two batters later on an Ashley Mickschl triple that got Augie on the board. Maggie Dunnett followed with a single through the left side that scored Mickschl to knot the game at 2-2.

Still tied 2-2 heading into the top of the eighth inning, with one runner on due to the international tiebreaker rule, the Rangers pushed that run across on an RBI single, which brought up Analece Apodaca, who delivered with a three-run blast over the left field fence to put Regis up 5-2.

The Vikings also got the free runner on second base to start their half of the eighth, but she didn't stay there long, as Christina Pickett smacked a two-run homer of the left field wall to cut the Rangers lead to 5-4, but Augustana would get no closer, as the next three batters went down in order.

The second game started a bit better for the Vikings, who got on the board first in the second inning with back-to-back one-out doubles from Pickett and Mickschl, and even though the Rangers got that one back in the bottom of the second, Augustana scored again in the third on a Kylie Rome RBI single to put the Vikings up 2-1.

The lead remained 2-1 heading into the sixth, when Apodaca struck again, this time with a solo shot to left center field, which knotted the game at 2-2, before a Rangers sacrifice fly put them up 3-2.

Needing at least one run to send the game to the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings got a sacrifice fly of their own from Petersen to tie the game, and then took a 4-3 lead on a Mickschl RBI single.

The Vikings get some time off before returning to action on Feb. 23, at the Kelly Laas Memorial Softball Invite in St. Cloud, Minnesota, where Augie opens with Missouri Western State, with games against Southwest Baptist, Fort Hays State and Nebraska-Kearney all on the slate.
