CLERMONT, Fla. – The Augustana softball team ran its winning streak to 11, with a pair of wins on Monday, and one more in the first of two games on Tuesday at the PFX Spring Games.
On Monday, the Vikings beat Indiana (Pa.), 7-4, before downing William Jewell 7-5, adding a 6-2 win over Kutztown on Tuesday afternoon to improve to 12-4 on the season.
Augustana takes on Fairmont State on Tuesday night, and then closes the tournament on Wednesday against Millersville and Illinois Springfield.
Augustana vs. IUP – Monday
The Vikings struck first with an RBI single from
Abbie Lund that scored
Kendall Cornick for a 1-0 lead.
Tied at 1-1 in the third, a
Shannon Petersen homerun to left center field put the Vikings up 2-1, before
Maggie Kadrlik stole home for a 3-1 lead after three complete.
The lead grew to 5-1 on a
Kylie Rome single in the fourth that scored Cornick and
Maggie Dunnett, and even though IUP got single runs back in the bottom of the fourth an fifth innings to cut the lead to 5-3, the Vikings got those runs back in the sixth on sacrifice flies from Rome and Petersen for a 7-3 lead.
IUP scored once in the seventh, but could not get a rally going, and fell 7-4.
Augustana vs. William Jewell – Monday
An unearned run in the bottom of the first inning gave the Vikings an early 1-0 lead, but it didn't last, as the Cardinals rattled off five unanswered runs, with one in the second, three in the third and one in the sixth to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
The Vikings fought back with six runs in the sixth to take a 7-5 lead, and then hung on for the win, their 10th straight.
Augustana vs. Kutztown – Tuesday
The Golden Bears batted first and struck first, plating two runs in the top of the first to take an early, but short-lived lead, as the Vikings got single runs in the first and second innings to square the game at 2-2.
The first run came on a Petersen RBI single that scored Lund, while the equalizer came from a Cornick triple that scored
Kara McDougall from first base.
Still tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, Augustana took the lead on a McDougall single, and then extended it to 4-2 on a Cornick groundout.
Petersen made it 5-2 with a solo homerun in the fourth, and Kadrlik added an insurance run with a solo shot of her own in the sixth to seal the 6-2 win.
