PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Augustana track and field team competed in three events at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday in Pittsburg, Kan. and came away with six All-American accolades. The women's DMR highlighted the Vikings with a first team honor and
Josh Barrows and
Anthony Huber took home second team honors. Each Viking student-athlete earned their first indoor All-American honor.
"We're really excited with today's performances," head coach
Tracy Hellman said of his All-Americans. "Everyone exceeded their rank coming into the championship and walked away with first or second team All American status – a first for all six athletes. That's a great cap to the indoor season for our program."
The women's DMR team led the charge for the Vikings on Friday with a finish that earned them first team All-American recognition. The team put together an eighth place finish with a school record breaking time of 11:39.36. The previous school record was held by the 2012 team of
Kyle Blakeslee, Collen Everson,
Kayla Mescher and
Runa Falch with a time of 11:40.29.
The splits for the women's DMR team were as followed:
Carly Rahn went 3:32 in the 1200-meters, Valerie (Moos) Gildemaster went 56.3 in the 400-meters,
Cassidy Soli raced to a time of 2:14 in the 800-meters and
Emily Tromp ran a 4:55 in the 1600-meters.
Barrows, a junior from Helena, Mont., earned his first career All-American honor in his second National Championship appearance. Barrows took home second team All-American honors with a ninth place finish in the 800-meters with a time of 1:52.13. Barrows just missed racing in the finals by two one-hundredths of a second.
Huber, a senior from Ethan, S.D., picked up his first All-American honor at his first National Championship appearance. Huber competed in the first flight and recorded his best mark in in third and final throw after faulting on his first two throws. Huber's clutch throw was good for 18.39-meters and put him in sixth after the first flight. After the last flight, Huber's mark put him in 12th and earned him second team All-American honors.
Next up for the Vikings will be the outdoor season that is set to begin on March 31 at the Southwest Minnesota State Invite in Marshall, Minn.
