Moe’s Late Goal, Pueschner’s Shutout Propels Vikings to Victory

Claudia Pueschner records her fourth shutout in a row

DULUTH, Minn. -- The Augustana women's soccer team (6-1-1) continued its shutout streak with a 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (3-5-0) on Friday night.

"This was a massive win," head coach Brandon Barkus said. "They are a very strong team and are tremendous on their home field. Playing on turf is one of the toughest things we face in our conference so I am incredibly happy with this win."

The Vikings moved the ball up the field with ease throughout the contest and generated plenty of scoring opportunities as 10 of their 11 shots were sent on goal. After a scoreless first half, the Vikings and Bulldogs traded scoring opportunities late into the second half

As tensions mounted late in the game, senior Peyton Stenzel lined up to take a corner kick with just under 10 minutes left in regulation. Stenzel sent a perfect cross to the foot of fellow senior Morgan Moe who kicked it past the sprawling goalkeeper to the bottom right corner of the net for a Vikings goal. The impressive play would prove to be the difference as the Viking's defense closed out the rest of the game.

"My biggest amount of joy comes from the fact that the two seniors contributed to the goal," Barkus said. "The grit and determination of this group is truly second to none and I feel blessed to coach this group."

Moe has had a stellar week on the soccer field. Before scoring tonight's game-winning goal (her first goal of the season), the senior was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week earlier this week. She is also the only Viking who has played every minute of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Claudia Pueschner continued her goal stopping tear with a 10 save shutout against the Bulldogs. Pueschner has now recorded four shutouts in a row and five on the season. Half way through her sophomore year, her career total sits at 15.
