SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana University community held its annual student-athlete blessing at Monday's worship service.
The message was delivered by assistant cross country/track & field coach
Scott Tanis and focused on Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12
9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
"I think the biggest thing is knowing that we are more powerful as a team," Tannis said. "The relationship with athletics, the people around us dictate our capacity for success in a lot of ways, I think that holds true in our spiritual life as well.
"I think acknowledging that, we don't have to play the same role. Some of us are at different points in our faith journey. Just knowing that if we can all be on a path forward and together; it is the same thing in athletics. If you get a team moving together and in the same direction, I think that is really special."
The blessing tradition, which started in 2014, is one of more than a dozen special services held each semester for the campus to attend.
