BURNSVILLE, Minn. – An NSIC Championship in men's cross country and three runner-up finishes from women's cross country, soccer and football have pushed Augustana atop the NSIC All-Sports Standings after fall sports. Augustana has tallied 70.5 points to sit 12 points ahead of Concordia-St. Paul the conference announced Wednesday.
The Augustana women sit a full point in front of the Golden Bears in the women's race with 40.5 points while the Viking men own 30 points, five points ahead of Minnesota State.
"This kind of competitive excellence across the board has become the norm at Augustana, and I see how hard our coaches and student-athletes work to make it a reality," director of athletics
Josh Morton said. "It's one thing to have one or two great programs, but we're blessed in our department that all of our sports are pursuing excellence in all that they do. Our coaches know how to win and do it with integrity and I look forward to our winter and spring sports to keep it going."
The current standings include five fall sports – men's and women's cross country, women's soccer, football and volleyball – and account for the point totals. The Viking women have won the last two women's all-sports awards while Augustana as a whole has captured five all-sports titles including three-straight from 2014-2017.
The NSIC All-Sports Award is calculated by awarding the winner of each conference-sponsored championship points totaling the number of teams in that sport plus one. The next place finisher receives points totaling the number of teams less the number of places from first place. Ties in the standings at any level result in the totaling of points and equal distribution.
In the initial NCAA Division II Learfield IMG College Director's Cup standings, the Vikings checked in in sixth place. The sixth-place ranking, the highest of any NSIC institution, comes virtue of the men's and women's cross country teams each placing sixth at the NCAA Division II National Championship.
The next update to the Directors' Cup Standings will be published on Dec. 19.
