Augustana Splits a Pair of Opening-Day Games

The Vikings are back in action tomorrow at 3:30 & 6 p.m.

CONROE, Texas -- Starting off their 2019 season at the Arkansas Tech Winter Invite, the Augustana women's softball team split of a pair of opening-day games on Friday afternoon. The Vikings picked up their first win of the season with a 1-0 win in 10 innings over Texas A&M International but would end the day's action losing to West Texas A&M, 5-4. Augustana moved to 1-1 (0-0 NSIC) on the year.

Game one recap:

The Vikings picked up their first win of the season in dramatic fashion on Friday. Following a dynamite pitching performance from Amber Elliott, the game was scoreless into the 10th inning. Junior Christina Pickett stepped up, driving in a run on a walk-off double to give the Vikings the 1-0 win.

Elliot tossed 10 innings, striking out seven batters and allowing just seven hits.

Augustana's first hit of the year came in the bottom of the second inning as Elliot hit a single to left field.

The bats went cold for the Vikings until the bottom of the sixth when Ashley Mickschl hit a two-out single to get Augustana on the bases. Mickschl would get caught stealing to end the bottom of the inning.

Augustana's offense came alive in the bottom the 7th inning when Mary Pardo singled up the middle to start the bottom half of the inning. She was then bunted over by Maggie Kadrlik to get into scoring position at second base. She was able to reach third base on a wild pitch but would be stranded at third base after a couple of strikeouts ended the inning.

Following three scoreless frames, in the bottom of the 10th, Kadrlik was able to reach base after being hit by a pitch. Abbie Lund would pinch-run for Kadrlik and Taylor Bross would advance her to second on a fielders choice. The Vikings had first and second occupied with no outs. Then Pickett drove in Lund on a walk-off double down the left field line for the 1-0 victory.

Mickschl, Pardo, Elliot and Pickett would all have a hit for the Vikings. Pickett would also have a RBI in the win.

Game two recap:

The second game started similar to the first, with the Vikings taking an inning or two to find their footing.

In the third, Amanda Dickmeyer started the inning being hit by a pitch. Mickschl stepped in and singled to have runners on first and second for the Vikings. Pardo then belted a single down the left field line to advance Mickschl to second and Dickmeyer home. The Vikings took a 1-0 lead.

Kadrlik was the next batter up, and the NSIC Preseason Player to Watch split the game wide open for the Vikings. She dug in and blasted a three-run shot to right field to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead early on.

However, Augustana gave up two runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth inning and trailed 5-4 going into their final two innings.  However, after the offense stepped up early in a four-run third inning, the bats went cold for Augustana as they couldn't plate another run.

The Vikings were led by Kadrlik with three RBIs and one home run. Mickschl, Pardo, Shannon Petersen and Maggie Dunnett would all record a hit in the loss.

Mickschl would face 29 batters in seven innings of work, giving up five earned runs and 10 hits. She would strike out nine batters and only walked three.

The Vikings look to get back into the win column on Saturday when they take on St. Mary's (TX) at 3:30 p.m. The Vikings finish up Saturday's action at 6 p.m. against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
