Vikings Dominate Winona State

Augustana is back in action tomorrow against Upper Iowa at 9 a.m.

WINONA, MINN. -- The Augustana women's tennis team continued NSIC play on Saturday afternoon against Winona State. The Vikings picked up a 7-0 win over the Warriors to move to 7-0 (5-0 NSIC) and Warriors move to 5-2 (5-1 NSIC).

Starting with doubles action, senior Kornelia Staniszewska teamed up with freshman Laura Arce Vieyra to defeat Beth Murman and Kaisey Skibba 6-3 to pick up their fifth win of the season in No. 1 Doubles. In No. 2 Doubles Taylor Jackson and Anca Rusu took down Tayla Card and Kendra Kappes 6-3 for their fifth win of the season in doubles action.

Rounding out doubles action on Saturday was Grace Goble and Annika Teske. The duo defeated Mya Lubben and Caitlin Anderson 6-0 to pick up their sixth win of the season.

In singles action, Augustana swept the board picking up six wins on the day. Staniszewska continued to dominate on the court picking up the 6-1, 6-1 win over Murman in No. 1 Singles. In No. 2 singles Arce Vieyra is coming off her first NSIC Player of the Week award, defeated Kappes 6-4, 6-2.

Jackson and Goble also picked up wins to give Goble seven wins and Jackson six wins on the season. Jackson defeated Skibba 7-6, 6-3 and Goble won 6-3, 6-1 over Card.

Rounding out the singles action on Saturday was Rusu and Teske both notched another win on the season. Rusu defeated Faith Young 6-0, 6-1 and Teske defeated Anderson 6-1, 6-3.

Overall head coach Marc Kurtz thought the women performed well on Saturday against a talented Winona State team.

"It was a strong performance by the team today," Kurtz said. "We had some adversity that we were able to overcome today and I was really happy that the girls were able to put that aside, focus and close out their matches. Winona is a solid team and this was a good win for us."

Augustana is back in action tomorrow in Winona, Minn to take on Upper Iowa at 9 a.m.
