Augustana Extends Their Conference Win-Streak

Vikings defeat Upper Iowa 7-0

WINONA, MINN. -- The Augustana women's tennis team finished up a pair of NSIC matches over the weekend. The Vikings defeated Upper Iowa 7-0 on Sunday morning to move to 8-0 (6-0 NSIC). The Peacocks now go to 2-5 (1-5 NSIC) on the season.

Coming off an impressive win against a talented Winona State team on Saturday, the Vikings didn't miss a beat on Sunday sweeping the courts against Upper Iowa in the win.

Starting the morning off in doubles action was the usual teammates of Kornelia Staniszewska and Laura Arce Vieyra in No. 1 Doubles. The duo defeated Shakhnaza Zhanatova and Maryke Badenhorst 6-0.

In No. 2 Doubles, Taylor Jackson teamed up with Anca Rusu to take down Deimante Krivickaite and Lara Peco, 6-1 and in No. 3 Doubles Grace Goble and Annika Teske defeated Lavanya Singh and Chelsea Scott 6-1.

Over in singles action, Staniszewska started play off with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Zhanatova in No. 1 Singles. With the win, Staniszewska is now 6-0 on the season in singles play. Over in No. 2 Singles, Arce Vieyra came away with the 6-4, 6-2 win over Badenhorst for her sixth win of the season.

Jackson won by retirement in No. 3 singles and in No. 4 singles Goble continued to dominate with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Peco for her eighth win of the season.

Rounding out the action in Winona was Teske and Rebecca Falkner. Teske won by retirement in No. 5 Singles and in No. 6 Singles Falkner picked up her third win of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Scott.

Head coach Marc Kurtz was impressed by the intensity in both the doubles and singles matches.

"We played well today," Kurtz said. "I liked our intensity in the doubles matches. The girls carried that into their singles matches as well. Now we have to get prepared for the three matches in Sioux Falls next weekend."

  • Vikings extended their conference win-streak to 105 games.
  • Augustana improved to 42-1 in singles action and 21-1 in doubles action on the season.
  • In NSIC action, the Vikings brought their singles record to 31-0 and their doubles record to 16-0.
  • Staniszewska brought her regular season singles win-streak to 24.
  • The last time Augustana lost a set this season was Feb. 02 against Rockhurst.

  • Six-of-the-seven players are currently undefeated in singles action and five-of-the-seven players are currently undefeated in doubles action.

Augustana returns to Sioux Falls to take on Sioux Falls on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Vikings will then host a pair of matches starting on Saturday against Minnesota Duluth at  6:30 p.m. and finish up the weekend hosting St. Cloud State at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be hosted at the GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletic Club.
