KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- On a sunny 85-degree night in Florida, the Augustana baseball team entered the record books in several different categories with a 20-14 win over Northwood on Monday night.
Despite giving up eight runs in the bottom of the second, Augustana (7-3, 0-0 NSIC) fought back to score a run in every inning except two. Evan Furst was the winning pitcher for the Vikings while Peter Joesph was the losing pitcher for the Timberwolves.
Augustana started off the game with some big hits as Ryan Nickel belted an RBI triple deep down the left field line to plate the games first run. One batter later Jordan Barth doubled to right field to score Nickel for the game's second run.
In the second inning, the Vikings notched another run from Riley Johnson's RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0 Augustana. The hit extended Johnson's hitting streak to five games on the season. In the bottom half of the inning, the Vikings struggled to get any consistency pitching as they gave up eight big runs to trail 8-3 heading into the top of the third.
That didn't faze the defending champs as they chipped away at the lead the next couple of innings. Then in the top of the fourth inning, Johnson blasted a two-run shot to left field to pull within two at 8-6. Not to be out dun by Johnson, Barth hit a two-run bomb to left field as well tying the score up at 8 all.
Augustana used a four-run fifth inning followed by a six-run sixth inning to put the game away for good. Northwood would get some life back after a four-run outburst in the eighth in a last-ditch effort to ignite the bats one more time but it wasn't enough as they were shutout in the bottom of the ninth.
For the Vikings, Johnson went 4-for-6 with four RBIs on one double and a home run, Nickel went 5-of-5 with two RBIs on two doubles and a triple and Barth went 6-of-6 with eight RBIs on four doubles and a home run. That was Barth's third consecutive game with multiple hits.
On the mound, Furst pitched 3.2 innings and allowed one earned run on five hits and four walks. He struck out three while facing 21 batters. Peyton Zabel pitched 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on one earned and one hit. The freshman faced nine batters and had three strikeouts and 4 walks on the night.
