MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Closing out a four-game road trip, the No. 17 Augustana softball made a big statement on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings crushed five home runs in 12-0 game one win over MSU Moorhead, and ended the day with an 8-0 win over the Dragons . Augustana now has 13 shutouts this season, which leads the NSIC.
During the four-game road trip, Augustana hit .422, slugged .810, and hit 12 home runs. In 22 innings, the pitching staff allowed just two runs for a 0.64 ERA.The Vikings have now won 10 straight and move to 42-7 (22-2 NSIC). MSU Moorhead drops to 12-29 (6-18 NSIC).Â
Moments that mattered:
- Mary Pardo set a new career-high with two home runs in the 1st inning. The freshman is the first Viking this season to hit two home runs in one inning. Â
- Maggie Kadrlik, Maggie Dunnett, and Delaney Young also hit home runs for Augustana. The five home runs is a season-high for the Vikings.
- Ashley Mickschl was lights out in the circle, pitching a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts. She has an NSIC-best 20 wins this season.
- Olivia Wolters started game two and was impressive. Wolters pitched five shutout inning, allowed three hits, and moved to 9-0 with the win.
- Kara McDougall and Mickschl both hit home runs in game two, and Petersen and Eisenreich both had two hits and an RBI.
Game one:
The Vikings bats came out with a boom on Saturday. Leading off in the top of the first,
Mary Pardo crushed the offering over the right-field fence. A
Shannon Petersen double scored
Kendall Cornick, and then a Kadrlirk round-tripper made it a 4-0 game.
Moments later it was Dunnett getting in on the home run party, depositing a three-run shot over the fence in center. The blast is Dunnett's 11th of the year, which ties her for first in the NSIC with Petersen.Â
Before the first frame was over, the Vikings batted around and saw Pardo blast her second solo home run of the first inning. Augustana moved to the bottom of the 1st with a 7-0 lead.
In addition to the offense,
Ashley Mickschl was equally impressive in the circle. The sophomore racked up seven strikeouts in a complete-game two-hitter. Mickschl now has 20 wins this year, which lead the NSIC.Â
The Vikings two more runs in the third, including a Mickschl RBI single. Moving to the 4th, freshman
Delaney Young connected on her third home of the year, which was a two-run shot. In total, the Vikings finished with five home runs on the day. The all-time single-game program record for home runs in a game is eight, which was accomplished in April of 2012 vs. Northern State.Â
Game two:
The Vikings offense went right to work in the top of first and loaded the bases.
Maggie Kadrlik drew her team-high 13th hit by a pitch for the game's first run, and
Samantha Eisenreich followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.Â
Olivia Wolters made just fifth start of the year in game two and was magnificent. The junior scatted just three hits over the course of five shutout innings. Wolters finished with five strikeouts and moved to 9-0 this year.Â
Moving to the second, an
Ashley Mickschl two-run home run doubled up the lead to 4-0. Mickschl now has three runs in the last six games for Augustana.Â
Petersen continued her power surge with an RBI double, making it 5-0 after two innings.Â
Following an Amanda Dickmeyer RBI ground out, Kara McDougall showed off her power with a solo home run to right field. By the end of the third inning, it was a 7-0 game. Eisenreich
added an RBI single to make it 8-0 in the 5th.Â
The Vikings now return home for their final home series of the regular season. Augustana welcomes in Upper Iowa for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 24. A senior day celebration, first pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Bowden Field.Â
