SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Three weeks into their 2019 spring season, the Augustana football team is making big strides on both sides of the ball. Looking at the offense, the Vikings could prove to be one of most dynamic teams in the Northern Sun Conference.
The focus this spring for the offense is not just to improve each practice, but expand the offense and become more dynamic than a season ago. Offensive coordinator
James Schrenk is dialed in and ready to lead the Viking to the next step.
"Let's go out every day and focus on the effort, technique, and finish," Schrenk said. "It's about more than just being better than the defense. We need to be the best at getting better."
A season ago Augustana had the fourth-best statistical offense in the NSIC. With
Kyle Saddler behind center, the Vikings ranked first in passing yards (315.2/gm) and second in touchdowns (30). Saddler has a talented core of quarterbacks behind him, including
Zach Masoli and
Vitu Chilongo.
Augustana has a strong group of running back, starting with
Rudolh Sinflorant and
Braiden Petersen. The Thunder and lightning combo rushing for more than 1300 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. This spring,
David Addo has shined on the field and is pushing for playing time.
"Day in and day our, coach [Robbie] Rouse preaches consistency," Sinflorant said. "Everyone is coming to work every day, being leaders, bringing the energy and competing for a role."
The Viking's core of wide receivers is arguably one of the deepest in the NSIC. Led by All-NSIC selection
Nickel Meyers (994 yards/13 touchdowns), the Vikings also return
Brett Shepley,
Drew Reinschmidt,
Jake Welsheimer and Sean Engle.
"We have talent on the outside, and then the slots are deep, physical and quick. It's going to be a dynamic year," Reinschmidt said.
Augustana continues spring practice throughout the next two week, all leading up the annual spring game on Saturday, May, 4th at Kirkeby-Over Stadium at 1 p.m.
