Defensive Spotlight: Augustana Spring Football

Vikings return three All-NSIC starters

5/1/2019 9:31:00 AM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- With one week to go before the 2019 spring season concludes, Augustana football continues to make strides on both sides of the ball. Looking at the defense, a full installation of new plays and schemes is complete, and now the focus becomes execution.

"I have confidence in our entire defense because we have experience at every position," Defensive Coordinator Jordan Malone said. "All of our younger players continue to develop, step up and learn the overall aspects of our defense."

Augustana returns a number of keys pieces on defense, starting up front on the defensive line. A year ago, Logan Swanson racked up 30 tackles, including two sacks and two forced fumbles on his way to earning All-NSIC honorable mention honors. Fellow starter Grayson Diepenbrock will help replace the production from Joey Newman, and is certain to make an impact this season.

Moving to the linebacker core, Augustana's focus is replacing one of the all-time greats in Kirby Hora. The Vikings have a number of options at Middle linebacker, but it's the energy, enthusiasm, and communication that is impressing All-NSIC senior Kyle Theis.

"We're playing great at every position group right now," Theis said. "Our defensive line is improving chemistry with our linebackers, and our backers are improving chemistry with the D-backs."

The Vikings return a talented group of defensive backs, led by Michael Kloza. A year ago, the Texas native swiped two interceptions in week one and finished the season with four picks and 56 tackles. The All-NSIC safety will be surrounded by talent in Eli Weber, Sydney Capers, and Kenneth Griffin.

Augustana focus now turns to the annual spring game, this Saturday, May, 4 at Kirkeby-Over Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable canned food item as a free-will donation for your admission to Kirkeby-Over Stadium. All items donated directly support Feeding South Dakota.  Items of particular need right now are canned goods such as fruit, vegetables, soup/stems and spaghetti/ravioli.
