LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After not cracking the nation's top-10 all season long, the Augustana Softball team now ends the year as the nation's unanimous No. 1 DII program. In the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, Augustana collected all 16 first-place votes and 400 points, earning their top spot on the chart.
Wednesday's ranking marks the first time since 1991 that Augustana sits as the nation's No. 1 team. Both seasons, Augustana softball finished with a school-record 61 wins.
Playing as a family in a relentless pursuit of a national title, the Vikings won the NSIC Tournament title, knocked off No. 2 Winona State in regionals, No. 1 Central Oklahoma in super regionals, and went 5-1 at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship to claim the title.
This season, Augustana set single-season marks for runs (491), hits (699), doubles (129), HR (94), RBI (458), total bases (1155), stolen bases (131), and slugging percentage (.576). The Viking pitching staff also finished top-10 in numerous single-season categories including wins (61), innings pitching (464.0), strikeouts (417), and opponent batting average (.197).
Earlier this week, the NFCA named Augustana's coach
Gretta Melsted,
Nat Wagner and
Kelsey Thompson the central region coaching staff of the year.
