FAYETTE, Iowa – The Augustana women's basketball team snapped its four-game skid in commanding fashion Friday night with a 69-50 victory over Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa. The game proved to be a total team effort with 11 of the 12 players who saw action scoring.
Junior
Hannah Mitby led the way for Augustana with 13 points and owned a stat line of five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Senior
Abby Hora joined Mitby in double-digit scoring with 11 points.
The Vikings improve to 7-6 overall and 3-6 in the NSIC while Upper Iowa drops to 2-13, 1-8.
Augustana shot 60 percent from the field in the first quarter to jump out to a 20-13 lead and never looked back while shooting 40 percent (28-of-70) for the game.
The Vikings never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 6-0 lead behind a jumper from Hora and back-to-back makes by Mitby. Augustana then used a 12-0 run to open the second quarter to open a 19-point advantage at 32-13. The Peacocks were held to just one field goal in the quarter, making just one of 12 shot attempts.
Augustana entered intermission with a 37-19 lead.
For the third-straight quarter, Augustana again used a run to cushion its lead. This time it was a 14-0 run to increase the lead to 32 points at 51-19 with 3:54 remaining in the quarter. When combined with the conclusion of the second quarter, Augustana scored 19-straight points.
The Vikings carried a 30-point advantage into the final quarter thanks to 3-point basket from
Hana Beyer as the buzzer was sounding.
The Peacocks made a small run of their own in the fourth quarter before settling on the final score of 69-50.
Beyer and Hora each led the Vikings with six rebounds while
Izzy Van Veldhuizen and Mitby each corralled five.
McKenzee Zilverberg dished a game-high four assists to go along with her seven points.
Augustana forced Upper Iowa into 23 turnovers and turned those into 29 points while UIU only scored five points off turnovers. The Vikings also dominated the paint, tallying 40 points in the box and holding Upper Iowa to six in the same area.
The win also keeps Augustana undefeated against Upper Iowa, improving to 23-0 all-time against the Peacocks.
The Vikings remain on the road Saturday with a 3:30 tip at Winona State.
