WINONA, Minn. – Senior
Hana Beyer recorded a double-double as the Augustana women's basketball team never trailed in a 68-51 win over Winona State Saturday afternoon. Beyer totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Vikings' first double-double of the season.
In all, four Vikings scored in double digits with senior
McKenzee Zilverberg tying Beyer for the team lead at 14 points. Senior
Abby Hora and junior
Hannah Mitby each tallied 11 points.
Augustana used a stifling defense in the opening quarter to open a 15-3 lead. The Vikings held Winona to 1-of-16 shooting in the opening quarter and held WSU scoreless for over eight minutes, stretching into the second quarter.
The Vikings then entered halftime holding a 33-18 advantage after scoring 11 points off turnovers in the opening two quarters.
The only quarter of the game Winona State outscored the Vikings was the third, but it was just a 22-21 advantage, so the Warriors didn't gain much ground on Augie. The Vikings came out firing in the fourth quarter to prevail 68-51, earning the season split with Winona State.
The weekend sweep is the first for Augustana this year in NSIC action as the Vikings improve to 8-6 overall and 4-6 in league play. Winona State, who entered the weekend in second place of the NSIC South Division standings, falls to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the NSIC.
Hora dished five assists, a game-high, while also tallying four steals. Beyer swiped five steals while recording a blocked shot. Her game-high 11 rebounds marked a career-best.
Augustana returns home to the Sanford Pentagon hosting Northern State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Tickets can be purchased at GoAugie.com/tickets.
