Viking Baseball Falls in Game Four, Splits Series With Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. -- The Augustana baseball team fell behind early and could not recover in its game four loss to the Emporia State Hornets. The series split with Emporia State moves the Vikings to 4-4 on the season.

The Hornets jumped on the Vikings early with a four-run first inning. Augustana pushed a run across in the top of the third on a JT Mix RBI groundout, but Emporia State got the run back with a two-run RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to push the score to 6-1. 

Junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz hit his third homer of the series in the top of the fourth to bring the score to 6-2, however each team would only cross home plate once more to bring the final score to 7-3. Augustana's other run came on a Jordan Barth RBI single to bring home Carter Howell in the top of the eighth. 

Junior lefty Jed Schmidt got the start on the hill for the Vikings going six innings and giving up five earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight. Freshman righty Caleb Kranz came on in relief and went two innings giving up one run and striking out four. 

Offensively, Augustana totaled eight hits including multi-hit games from Sam Baier and Barth who extended his hitting streak to eight games. Howell, Riley Johnson and Will Olson all notched hits in the effort in addition to Rosencranz's home run.

The Vikings take on Southwest Baptist in a three-game series next weekend. Game one is set for Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
