WINTER HAVEN, FL -- An impressive performance from start to finish. On Sunday afternoon, the No. 1 Augustana softball started fast and didn't look back en route to a 9-0 victory over Malone at the 2020 Spring Games.
The VIkings (10-3) got contributions up-and-down the lineup, starting in the circle with
Ashley Mickschl. The junior ace was untouchable, pitching four hitless innings and racking up seven strikeouts. On offense, Augustana saw five players connect on two or more hits, including
Mary Pardo and
Delaney Young, who both had three RBI.
Mickschl (7-1) took the circle to start for the Vikings and didn't disappoint. The two-time NSIC pitcher of the week picked up four strikeouts in the first two innings to pace the Vikings. Mickschl now has 380 career strikeouts, placing her 10th all-time in program history.
Ashley finished with four innings pitched, zero hits and seven strikeouts.
Amber Elliott pitched a scoreless fifth frame, including a pair of strikeouts, for Augustana.
Following a quiet first frame, Augustana's offense came to life in the second. With a runner on, Young connected a line drive home run ro left center field. Now leading 2-0, Pardo sent a blooper into shallow center, allowing
Abbie Lund to sprint home from second base.
After hitting her first career-home run on Saturday, freshman
Torri Chute followed up her power performance with another solo shot in the third inning. Moments later, Young blasted a two-run double to left scoring Olivia Halzelbaker. Halzelbaker had a career-high two-hit performance, including her first collegiate double.
The Vikings added five total runs in the third, including a fielding error and two-run double from
Mary Pardo. Just a sophomore, Pardo surpassed 100 career hits in Sunday's win.
Christina Pickett also continued to swing a solid bat, connecting on two hits for the second-straight day. Pickett's RBI double to left center scored Chute and proved to be the game's final run.
Augustana returns to the DiamondPlex Softball complex on Monday, taking Concord for a 2:45 p.m. start and Wayne State (MI) at 5 p.m.
