WINTER HAVEN, FL -- No. 1 Augustana Softball collected a sweep on Monday at the 2020 Spring Games. Augustana opened the afternoon with a 5-1 win over Concord and capped off the day with a 9-2 win over Wayne State (MI). Augustana (12-3) improves to 4-1 at the Spring Games.
The story of both games was the outstanding efforts from Augustana's starting pitchers. In game one, Amber Elliot matched a career-high with a 13 strikeout performance. In game two,
Ashley Mickschl was outstanding from the start, finishing with 10 strikeouts for the Vikings. Augustana also racked up a season-high 17 hits in game two.
Game One
Amber Elliott got the start in game one, and although two runners quickly got into scoring position, the junior collected three-straight strikeouts to end the inning. Elliott surrendered a run in the second, but also racked up three more strikeouts in the inning.
Trailing 1-0 in the 4th, freshman
Torri Chute continued to swing a hot bat with a solo home run to center. Chute now has three round-trippers in the last three games.
Augustana's offense continued to work later in the 4th. Elliott helped her own cause with a line drive single right, driving in two runs and giving the Vikings a 3-1 lead.
Moments later, it was
Mary Pardo providing some insurance runs for the Vikings. The Sophomore is on a tare as of late, hitting a two-run rocket over the left field fence.
The 5-1 lead was more than enough for Elliott, who pitched her second complete game of the year. The junior finished with seven innings pitched, zero earned runs and 13 strikeouts.
Elliott, along with Pardo, both led the team with two RBI on the day.
Game Two
The Vikings pitcher prowess continued in game two, sparked by
Ashley Mickschl. The junior collected four quick strikeouts in the first two innings, facing one batter over the minimum. Mickschl finished with 10 strikeouts, her second double-digit strikeout performance this season.
Pardo continued to provide offense in the second inning, driving in the game's first run on a fielder's choice. Mickschl helped her own cause with a RBI moments later, making it a 2-0 game. Mickschl's run also passed 100 career RBI for the junior.
Moving to the fourth, Pardo made it back-to-back games with a home run, sending a solo shot down the left field line. Later in the fourth,
Kendall Cornick singled to center field, driving in Mickschl to make it 4-0.
Delaney Young kept the Viking offense rolling with a solid single to center, scoring Cornick and adding to the lead.
Wayne State added two runs to make a 5-2 game in the 6th, but the Viking offense would quickly respond. Cornick crushed a two-run double to center - her 50th career RBI - scoring Pardo and
Kara McDougall to make it 7-2.
Torri Chute added an RBI groundout to make it 8-2, and
Christina Pickett provided the game's final run with an RBI single to right field.
The Vikings season-high 17 hits including a four-hit performance from
Abbie Lund, and three hits from both Mickschl and Cornick.
Mickschl continued to dominate into the later innings, finishing with just two runs and six hits allowed. Ashley's seven-inning performance marked her fifth complete game and eighth win of the year.
Augustana continues action on Tuesday, starting with a 2:30 first-pitch against Truman State and concluding with a 4:45 p.m. game against Lake Erie.
