Augustana Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Minnesota State

Guetter Surpasses 500 Career Kills

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Augustana volleyball team fell just short of defeating Minnesota State losing in five sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-21,25-21, 15-8) on Friday night, snapping a six-match winning streak.

Augustana now holds a record of 12-6 overall and 7-2 within the NSIC. Minnesota State is now 11-8 and 6-4 in the loop.

After losing set one 25-19, the Vikings came out hot in the second set.

Senior Payton Rosendahl delivered a kill to give Augustana an 8-2 lead early in the set.

The Vikings maintained the lead for the entirety of the set, with the Maverick's closest attempt coming at 17-17.

Back-to-back kills from junior Maddy Guetter, who earlier in the set surpassed 500 career kills, gave Augustana a sizable cushion at 24-18 and claimed the set at 25-20.

The two teams would then trade matches with Minnesota State claiming set three and the Vikings claiming set four.

The Vikings rose to the occasion in the fourth set, after a Maverick point dropped the Viking lead to one at 22-21, Guetter, for the second time Friday evening, had back-to-back kills just before the set point.

Junior Kia Kriener dealt the final kill of the set, leaving the match to be decided in the fifth set.

Augustana would erase a five-point deficit to come within two points halfway through the fifth set, although the Mavericks would prevail, winning the set 15-8.

The Vikings were led by Guetter with 30 kills, her second-straight match with at least 30 kills. Avery Thorson totaled 53 assists while Erika Bute led the way with 22 digs.

Both Guetter and Thorson had double-doubles on the night with Guetter having 30 kills and 18 digs while Thorson recorded 53 assists and 17 digs.
