Kleekamp Nets Game-Winner in Overtime

Viking soccer earns victory over UMary on Senior Day

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.-- A goal by Kelly Kleekamp in overtime gave Augustana soccer a 3-2 win in overtime on Sunday. The Vikings keep their unbeaten-at-home streak alive and end the weekend with two victories. Augustana celebrated Senior Day and eight senior players were recognized for their dedication to the program in a pregame ceremony.

Augustana jumped UMary in the NSIC standings with the win, holding an 8-3-2 overall record and are 7-1-2 in the NSIC. UMary suffered its second loss in NSIC play, and second of the weekend, falling to 6-2-2 in the loop and 7-3-3 overall.

"Wow, what a game," Augustana head coach Brandon Barkus said. "Today's game felt like a postseason game. The intensity and attitude that both teams played with was awesome.

"I am really happy to come away with a win, but credit to UMary, they were organized and intense, they are a very good team."

Morgan Keirstead scored the first goal of the game in the 15th minute off of a pass from Alexis Legg. Legg tapped the ball to Keirstead at the top right corner of the box and Keirstead sent a laser into the center of the net. The goalkeeper mishandled Keirstead's shot and the Vikings took the lead early.

UMary tied the game up shortly after in the 22nd minute of action.

Sophomore Grace Douglas put the Vikings back on top with a goal in the second half of play in the 69th minute. The goal was assisted by Brooke Oberbroekling and Mackenzie Ternes. Oberbroekling crossed the ball from the left side of the field and Ternes popped the ball over the defender, allowing Douglas to slide one past the goalie.

With just under three minutes left to play, UMary tied the game for the second time, sending the teams to overtime.

A foul in the Marauder's box allowed a penalty kick to take place five minutes into the first overtime period. Kleekamp took the shot for the Vikings and scored, earning the victory for AU.

Augustana edged out UMary in shots, with 10 shots on goal and 18 overall. UMary tallied 14 shots with only seven being on goal.

"With today being Senior Day, it always brings a different level of passion and emotion from everyone," Barkus added. "We started the game a little too 'emotional' but once we settled in I felt good about how we played. I truly love our seniors and I'm excited to see what the rest of the season holds for this team!"

Goalkeeper Meghan Kuntz made her first start of the season in net, facing three shots. Jillian Barkus substituted in for Kuntz in the second half of action and made two saves.
