WINONA, Minn.-- Augustana soccer defeated the Winona State Warriors on Sunday with a final score of 4-3 to push its win streak to nine games. The nine-straight wins tie a program record for most-consecutive wins.
The Vikings improve to 12-3-2 overall and 11-1-2 in NSIC action. Winona State falls to 4-11-1 on the season and 3-10-1 in NSIC conference play.
"It was a really fun, competitive game," Augustana head coach Brandon Barkus said. "It was Winona State's Senior Day and they brought great energy and played with tremendous determination. It had a postseason feel to it for sure!"
Senior Morgan Keirstead scored the first goal for the Vikings to put AU up in the 19th minute of play. Senior Carlie Kray picked up the assist on the goal after sending the ball to Keirstead from the goal line. Keirstead was able to beat the Winona State goalkeeper into the lower-left corner of the net.
Winona State was able to respond with a goal in the 20th minute.
Senior Alexis Legg showed a strong performance with three of the four Viking's goals. Legg netted her first of the game in the 24th minute after a pass from Morgan Keirstead putting the Vikings ahead of the Warriors.
The Warriors scored their second of the game to tie it up in the 37th minute of play.
Legg netted an unassisted goal just two minutes later and regained Augustana's lead. With seconds left to play in the first half, Legg recorded her first career hat trick with another unassisted goal.
The Warriors got one back in the 62nd minute, but fell short of the victory.
"Alexis was amazing and Savannah Ellender on defense was really strong," Barkus added. "Other than the goal we scored on ourselves, I was decently happy with our performance.
"I'm hoping we can continue our scoring ways going into our final regular season game next Friday!"
Augustana recorded 13 shots with eight being shots on goal. Legg led the Vikings with seven shots and five were shots on goal. Her hat trick is the first for Augustana since Samantha Tymkowicz netted three goals on Oct. 27, 2017.
The Warriors tallied six shots on goal and 11 total shots.
Goalkeeper Jillian Barkus made four saves to hold down the backfield for Augustana.
Augustana, who has secured a first round home game for the NSIC Tournament, will conclude its regular season on Friday at Wayne State. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
