ABERDEEN, S.D. – Trailing 59-58 with under four minutes to play,
Adam Dykman sank a 3-point basket from the left corner and the Augustana men's basketball team never trailed again in a 73-63 win over Black Hills State Friday. The contest was the opening game of the East/West Challenge taking place in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 3-0 in the season while Black Hills State is handed its first loss on the young season to fall to 2-1.
Isaac Fink secured his second-career double-double with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. He was one of three Vikings in double-figure scoring as
Tyler Riemersma tallied 21 points and
Dylan LeBrun with 10 points.
Augustana was off to the races to start the game and built an 11-point advantage at 20-9 after Fink scored an old-fashioned 3-point play with exactly 10 minutes on the clock. However, a scoreless drought for the Vikings allowed BHSU back into the game as the Yellow Jackets knotted the score up at 24-all with 4:33 on the clock.
The squads played hot potato with the lead before a LeBrun jumper gave AU a 31-30 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.
Neither team was able to gain separation in the second half, once again, having the lead change hands multiple times. The second half totaled four lead changes and two ties. It was Dykman's 3-point basket with 3:33 on the clock that boosted Augustana into a lead it would not relinquish.
Leading 62-61, Augustana would finish the game on an 11-2 run for the final score of 73-63.
The Vikings shot 44.1 percent from the field for the game while the Yellow Jackets were 39.3 percent. Augustana held a +12 rebound margin, securing 42 rebounds compared to BHSU's 30.
The Vikings remain in Aberdeen to conclude the East/West Challenge Saturday against South Dakota Mines. Tip-off on Don Meyer Court is slated for 2 p.m.
