BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- The 2021 Augustana men's golf squad was selected eighth with 31 points in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll the conference announced Wednesday morning. Junior Alex Stanz was also selected as the Vikings Preseason Golfer to Watch.

"We bring back some upperclassmen who are hungry to play after last season," head coach Danny Sinksen said. "We bring experience and power golf to the table and are looking forward to a great season."

The Vikings
In 2021, Augustana returns a veteran roster of eight golfers with four juniors, one senior and three newcomers. Junior Jacob Lee returns as the Vikings lead golfer after a 2019-20 season that featured 14 rounds of golf, two top-five finishes and three top-10 finishes in six events. Lee also led the squad in average strokes per round with 76.86.

Juniors Sam Sutcliffe (79.36 strokes per round with one top-10 finish), Alex Stanz (79.62  strokes per round) and Hunter Von Bergen (82.55 strokes per round) and senior Sam Mock (83.00 strokes per round) fill out the rest of the returning Vikings. Cullen Johnson (Apple Valley, Minn.), Jordan Slagle (New Hope, Minn.) and Spencer Wittstruck (Sioux Falls, S.D.) will debut in 2020-21 for Augustana.

The Vikings are set to compete in five regular-season events, starting on March 5, before the NSIC Championships take place in Kansas City, Missouri, on April 16. The full schedule can be found here.

Alex Stanz
A native of Becker, Minnesota, Stanz returns to the Vikings in 2020-21 after a 2019-20 season in which he competed in six events and 13 rounds of golf with a 79.62 average strokes per round. The junior shot a season-low of 72 in round two of the Augustana Invite on Sept. 29, 2019. His career low of 71 came during his freshman season in 2018-19.

"Alex is a powerful golfer who has worked really hard on his game," said Sinksen. "With his distance and experience, he will be one to watch in 2021."
