Tanner Brown, Early Offense Gives Augustana Baseball Season-Opening Win

LAWTON, Okla. -- Junior southpaw Tanner Brown was sharp in the Augustana baseball team's season-opening win over the Cameron University Aggies Friday in Lawton, Oklahoma. Brown delivered six innings of one-run ball (unearned) with nine strikeouts while surrendering just three hits as the Vikings took home the 9-6 victory.

The aforementioned Brown received some early run support from his offense in the win. Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell led the game off with a hit-by-pitch in an 0-2 count. Howell then stole second and third base, before scampering home on a throwing error caused by his steal of third.

Already leading 1-0, the Vikings took control of the contest in the top of the third inning, posting a six-spot on the scoreboard. Freshman infielder Tate Meiners walked to start the inning followed by a single from the bat of junior infielder JT Mix to set the table. After a fielder's choice, senior outfielder Riley Johsnon brought home a run with an RBI single and then stole second base, scoring another Augustana runner caused by an errant throw from the Aggies.

Johnson then scored himself to bring the score to 4-0, after junior NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Jordan Barth drove him in with an RBI single. Junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz followed Barth with an RBI triple to make the score 5-0 Augustana. After a walk and passed ball, senior infielder Sam Baier rifled a two-run single to center to balloon the Vikings advantage to 7-0.

The Aggies scratched an unearned run across in the bottom of the third. However, Augustana went up 9-1 with a Johnson RBI groundout in the fourth and a run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

Cameron attempted to mount a late comeback, scoring twice in the eighth and three times in the ninth, to no avail, however, as junior righty Thomas Bruss secured the 9-6 win while earning the save.

Offensively, the Vikings were led by Baier, who went 4-for-4 on the day with two RBIs, a walk and a steal. Barth, Johnson and Mix also notched multi-hit games, each with two apiece. Barth's third-inning RBI single extended his hitting-streak to 14 games, dating back to hitting safely in every game last season. Howell, Rosencranz, Meiners and junior catcher Will Olson each notched hits on the day as well.

On the mound, Brown earned the win for the Vikings while Bruss took home the save. Senior righty Jordan Gesling, junior righty Evan Furst and sophomore righty Tony Lanier all saw action on the mound as well for the Vikings.

The loss drops the Aggies to 3-4 on the season while the Vikings start their 2021 campaign in the win column for just the second time in the last decade, joining the 2018 national title team.
