Augustana Baseball Cruises to Saturday Sweep, Series Win Over Cameron University

LAWTON, Okla. -- The Augustana baseball team brought some hot bats to McCord Field Saturday afternoon in its doubleheader sweep of the Cameron University Aggies. The Vikings scored a combined 31 runs on the day, winning 19-4 and 12-6.

Game One (19-4)
Early and often was the story for Augustana's offense in its dominating 19-4 seven-inning victory over the Aggies in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Every Viking who stepped up to the plate in game one (13 overall) recorded a hit as the Vikings tallied multiple runs in five-of-seven innings and scored in six-of-seven innings.

Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell started the game with a bunt single on the first pitch. After a couple of outs, junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz put the visitors on the board with an RBI single. Rosencranz then scored on an RBI bunt single off the bat of senior infielder Sam Baier to push the score to 2-0.

After taking the lead in the first, Augustana never looked back and tallied three or more runs in each of the next four frames. The top of the second featured an RBI single by junior infielder JT Mix, a Howell RBI single and an RBI double from junior infielder Jordan Barth to extend his hitting-streak to 15 games and put the Vikings up 5-0.

The Vikings scored three more times in the third after a solo home run by Baier, an unearned run on a Howell stolen base and an RBI double off the bat of senior outfielder Riley Johnson. The fourth inning saw four more Vikings cross the plate to balloon the score to 12-0. In the frame, Augustana scored once on a passed ball, once on a hit by pitch and twice on a two-run single from Howell.

Augustana then officially made it a football score in the top of the fifth with six runs and six hits for an 18-0 lead. Senior infielder Darek Bornemeier started the fun with a bases-loaded two-run double before Mix brought home another run with a sacrifice fly. Senior infielder and Augustana newcomer Christian Kuzemka followed with an RBI double in his first at-bat as a Viking to move the score to 16-0. Kuzemka then scored on a Johnson RBI single. Johnson scored himself on a frozen-rope RBI base hit off the bat of senior infielder Aiden Ladd

The Vikings tallied their 19th and final run of the game in the top of the sixth on sophomore catcher Mitch Stroh's solo home run.

The plethora of run support was hardly needed for Augustana starting pitcher Ryan Jares. Jares, making his debut for the Vikings after spending a couple of seasons at Scottsdale Community College, tossed five shutout innings, surrendered zero runs and struck out eight Aggie hitters while conceding just three hits.

Sophomore righty Josh Olson recorded the final six outs for the Vikings, allowing zero runs and one hit with two strikeouts.

Howell and Johnson each recorded three hits in the game (Howell a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs, one walk and two steals) while four more Vikings logged multiple hits (Baier, Stroh, Bornemeier and Mix). Kuzemka, Barth, Ladd, Rosencranz, junior catcher Will Olson, freshman infielder Maddux Baggs and junior catcher Michael Schoettmer each finished with one hit apiece.

10 different Vikings tallied RBIs in the game along with four steals and four hit by pitches as a team.

Game Two (12-6)
The game two script for the Vikings was a bit different than the one-sided romp in game one. Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning, Barth singled to extend his hitting-streak to 16 games. Rosencranz, the next batter, then tied the game up with a monster home run to left field, his first of the season. After an Olson walk, Baier walk and Kuzemka single loaded the bases, the Vikings took a 4-2 lead on a Bornemeier two-run single.

Solo home runs from the Aggies in the bottom of the fourth and fifth tied the score up at 4-4, before Augustana took the lead for good in the top of the sixth.

With one out, Mix laced a triple down the right field line and then scored on a Howell RBI single to the right side for the 5-4 advantage.

The Vikings added to their lead with a four-spot in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, Olson and Baier drew walks to set the table for Kuzemka. The senior delivered a scorching line drive to centerfield and once the Aggie centerfielder's dive attempt came up short, Kuzemka was off to the races for a two-run RBI triple and 7-4 Augustana lead. Kuzemka then scored after a great baserunning read on Bornemeier's steal. Bornemeir then scored Augustana's ninth run on a JT Mix RBI double down the right field line.

The Aggies countered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, cutting the deficit to 9-6. Augustana, however, scored three times in the top of the ninth on a Johnson two-run single and Barth RBI single to move the score to 12-6.

Junior southpaw Jed Schmidt pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the win and move the Vikings to 3-0 on the young season. The Aggies fall to 3-6.

On the mound, senior righty Parker Hanson got the start for Augustana and went 2.2 innings with three strikeouts. Senior lefty Koby Bishop relieved Hanson with a strong 5.1 inning performance that featured a whopping 10 strikeouts, before the aforementioned Schmidt shut the door.

Offensively, Kuzemka led the Vikings with four hits in five at-bats including one run, two RBIs and two extra base hits. Johnson, Barth and Mix all notched multi-hit games as well while Howell, Rosencranz and Bornemier each finished with one hit apiece.
