Augustana Ties Strikeout Record in Series Sweeping Win Over Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. -- The Augustana pitching staff struck out 18 Aggie hitters Sunday afternoon, tying the school record from 1958, in its series-sweeping win in game four over Cameron University. The Vikings defeated the Aggies 10-2, outscoring them 50-18 in the series.

Senior NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Max Steffens got the start for Augustana and he did not disappoint. A solo home run from the Aggies to lead off the game didn't sit well with Steffens, as he decided to respond with utter dominance. The senior tossed five innings with just 65 pitches while striking out six and allowing just one more hit and no runs after the homer.

Sophomore righty Tony Lanier relieved Steffens and was just as dominant. In two innings of work, Lanier struck out five Aggie hitters while allowing no runs to cross the plate. Freshman righty Caleb Saari then took the ball from Lanier and pitched one scoreless inning with two strikeouts himself.

Junior righty Thomas Bruss took the mound for the Vikings in the ninth and delivered a performance for the ages. Bruss struck out five Aggie hitters in just one inning of work. Bruss struck out two of the first three Aggie hitters to start the ninth, however the scoreboard read zero outs as both hitters advanced safely on passed balls. After loading the bases, Bruss struck out three-consecutive hitters (all swinging) to end the game and his crazy ninth inning.

The NCAA does not keep a record for strikeouts in an inning for Division II. However, the five strikeouts would tie the Division I record which has happened twice with the last in 2003.

Offensively, the Vikings slowly buried the Aggies, scoring in six different frames on the day.

Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell scored on a passed ball in the first inning to start it off for Augustana. Howell then drove in the Vikings second run of the day with an RBI triple in the top of the third and then scored himself on an error later in the inning.

Up 3-1 in the top of the fourth, junior catcher Will Olson led the inning off with a double and scored shortly thereafter on an RBI double off the bat of senior infielder Christian Kuzemka. In the top of the fifth, junior infielder Jordan Barth extended his hitting-streak to 17 games after doubling in senior outfielder Riley Johnson who had singled earlier in the frame.

Already up 5-1, the Vikings took a commanding 9-1 lead with four runs in the top of the eighth. After a couple of walks to start the frame, junior infielder JT Mix smoked an RBI double. Sophomore catcher Mitch Stroh then scampered home on a wild pitch followed by Mix scoring on a steal of home while Howell stole second. Augustana added its last run of the frame on a passed ball.

Freshman catcher Drey Dirksen rounded out the scoring in the top of the ninth for the Vikings with a sacrifice fly.

Overall, Kuzemka and Mix each had two hits apiece while Howell, Johnson, Barth and Olson finished with one.
