Viking Baseball Opens Conference Play With Nail-Biting Victory

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana pitching staff was stellar in its 3-2 series-opening victory over the St. Cloud State Huskies. The Vikings allowed just one earned run and seven hits while striking out seven in the victory.

Junior southpaw Tanner Brown got the start on the mound for Augustana and went four innings, allowing one earned run and five hits. Fellow lefty and senior Koby Bishop took the ball from Brown and dominated the Huskies. In four innings of work, Bishop struck out four and allowed just one hit, the only baserunner that reached against him.

After Bishop, junior righty Thomas Bruss recorded an out in the ninth inning, before turning things over to sophomore righty Tony Lanier. Lanier earned the save two strikeouts to clinch the victory.

Offensively, the Vikings started the scoring early. Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell earned an infield hit to start the game off and after a wild pitch, showed off some blazing speed. The sophomore took second base on the wild pitch and came all the way around to score after an errant throw went into the outfield.

Up 1-0, junior catcher Will Olson walked to start the second inning and moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt from senior shortstop Sam Baier. After a wild pitch moved Olson to third, the junior came around to score on an errant pickoff attempt to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

The Huskies then scratched a couple of runs across in the top of the third to tie the game 2-2. The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth where some tough Augustana at-bats produced a run.

Junior infielder Jordan Barth legged out an infield hit to start the inning and extend his hitting-streak to 18 games. Junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz followed Barth with a single through the left side. Olson followed the singles with a hit by pitch, giving Augustana a bases-loaded, no-outs situation. After a fielder's choice, senior Christian Kuzemka came to the plate and gave the Vikings a 3-2 lead with a hard-fought base on balls. The RBI walk proved to be the game-winner.

Overall, the Vikings finished with seven hits: two from Howell and one from Baier, Barth, Rosencranz, junior infielder JT Mix and senior outfielder Riley Johnson

Augustana is now 5-0 on the young season and 1-0 in conference play.
