Steffens Pitches Viking Baseball to Series Win Over Winona State

WINONA, Minn. -- Senior NSIC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Max Steffens delivered one of his gutsiest performances in a Viking uniform Sunday morning in Augustana's 6-4 game-three victory over the Warriors of Winona State.

Steffens tossed 8.2 innings and threw 117 pitches in the victory while striking out nine and scattering 11 hits and four runs (only three of which were earned).

"Early on I was trying to find a feel for my pitches and unfortunately ran into some bad luck," said Steffens. "But once the offense broke through and had that five-run inning, I knew it was going to be very tough for them to overcome that.

"I'm extremely proud of our team today. That's a good ball club and a big win for us."

In six starts this season, Steffens is now 6-0 in 37 innings pitched with a 1.70 ERA and 38 strikeouts.

After the Warriors scored once in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead, Steffens received the lion's share of his run support in the top of the third inning from the Augustana offense.

Junior infielder JT Mix singled to start the frame followed by a walk from senior shortstop Sam Baier. With one out in the inning, junior infielder Jordan Barth singled to load the bases. The very next hitter, senior infielder Chrisitan Kuzemka, capitalized with the runners in scoring position and sent a two-run single to the left fielder to tie the game.

Tied 2-2, junior catcher Will Olson stepped up to the plate after Kuzemka and launched his ninth homer of the year to left field, a three-run shot that put the Vikings up 5-2 and tied Olson for the NSIC lead in homers. Baier is also tied with Olson for the NSIC homers lead.

The Warriors reduced their deficit to two runs in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, however Augustana countered with an insurance run in the top of the eighth on a clutch sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman infielder Max Mosser

Up 6-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Steffens took the mound and secured two outs, but not before Winona State tallied an unearned run.

Standing one out away from victory with runners on first and third, Head Coach Tim Huber turned to his bullpen and brought in sophomore righty Ryan Jares to close things out.

Jares needed just three pitches as he struck out Winona State's Nick Herbst to secure the game-three victory and series victory for Augustana.

At the plate, Mosser went a perfect 3-for-3 with the aforementioned sacrifice fly while Barth tallied two hits. Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell, Baier, Kuzemka, Olson and Mix all finished with one.
