LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Augustana's
Kendall Cornick has been selected as a top-30 finalist for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year the NFCA announced Monday. The top-10 finalists will be announced on May 18 with the winner being revealed on June 3.
Â
Cornick, hailing from Mason City, Iowa, is the NSIC leader in several statistical categories and, rightfully so, among the nation's best. She owns a .496 batting average, has 57 total hits, 34 RBI and 13 doubles. In addition, she has stolen 29 bases in 2021 with a 100 percent success rate.
Â
Cornick is a two-time NSIC Player of the Week honoree this season including earning the honor earlier Monday. She has led the Vikings to a 36-4 overall record in 2021 and a No. 1 national ranking from the NFCA.
Â
The Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Player of the Year award was created in 2015 to honor the outstanding athletic achievements among softball student-athletes throughout NCAA Division II. In 2019, the Association expanded the award to include a Player and Pitcher of the Year. To be eligible, student-athletes must be nominated by their member head coach. With the cancellation of last year's season due to COVID-19 and a higher percentage of eligible candidates, an additional five players have been added to the traditional top 25.
