AUSTIN, Texas – Recent Augustana University graduate and softball student-athlete
Kendall Cornick is the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America Team Member of the Year for NCAA Division II Softball. Joining Cornick on the Academic All-America Team is
Ashley Mickschl who was a second-team selection.
Cornick, a two-time Academic All-America honoree, is the fourth Augustana student-athlete to earn a Team Member of the Year honor, joining most recently Kirby Hora (2018) along with Jacob Blank (2018) and David Gubbrud (1988 and 1989).
A native of Mason City Iowa, Cornick graduated with a 3.94 GPA while earning her dual degrees in biology and psychology. She was recently awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, a scholarship she will use while attending the University of Iowa for medical school. She is also the Augustana nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year.
On the playing field, Cornick is a consensus First Team All-America selection while being a finalist for the Schutt/NFCA National Player of the Year. She simply led the NSIC in batting average, total hits, stolen bases and on-base percentage. Throughout the year, she carried a 20-game hitting streak and tallied an on-base streak of 23 games. She concluded her career ranking second all-time at Augustana in stolen bases while owning a career .377 batting average.
Mickschl, hailing from Woodbury, Minnesota, earns her first career Academic All-America accolade after tallying the most wins in Division II with 27 and recording a 3.73 GPA while double majoring in education and Spanish.
The Second Team NFCA All-America selection recorded a perfect game on April 24 against MSU Moorhead. In that contest, just a single ball left the infield for the out as she was in complete control from start to finish. Mickschl led the NSIC and ranked third in the nation with 24 complete games and tallied a 1.83 ERA. In 191 innings pitched, she allowed just 133 hits.
The senior will be returning to Augustana in 2022 for her extra year granted by the NCAA due to the COVID shortened season in 2019.
The Division II Academic All-America program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Division II Academic All-America program.
