Viking Volleyball Sweeps Past Beavers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana volleyball team defeated the Beavers of Minot State in three sets (25-13, 25-10, 25-14) in the Elmen Center on Friday night. 

The Vikings move to an 14-6 record with a 6-6 record in NSIC play. The Beavers have fallen to a 0-19 record and are 0-12 in the loop. 

Augustana took full control of set one opening the set with an early 6-0 run. Seniors Kia Kriener and Maddy Guetter made the difference for the Vikings with three kills apiece adding to Augustana's total 10 in set one alone. To add to her impressive performance at the net, Guetter delivered two aces to reign home five points in the first set. A final kill by senior Callie Hohenhaus reigned home the Vikings first set win of the night. 

The Vikings were firing on all cylinders in set two hitting an astounding .469 attack percentage. Adding to the efficient stat line for the Vikings was sophomore Jolie Stecher who hit an impressive .714 delivering five of her seven kills. Stecher also gave out three aces in the second set with two being back-to-back. AU was able to capitalize on Minot attack errors in the second set to propel them home with their second set win of the match.

Set three was a cruise to the finish line for the Vikings. The third and final set was opened by a hot kill by Kriener to ignite momentum in the Vikings. AU had full control of the set and sealed the deal with a final 5-0 run to pull away with the lead mid-set. Kriener and Stecher each delivered an ace apiece as well as senior Erika Bute with one to lead AU to match and set point. A final Beaver attack error sent the Vikings home with their third set win of the evening. 

Overall, Augustana recorded 42 kills and had 10 aces compared to the Beavers 13 kills and two aces. Guetter led the way for the Vikings with 11 kills and had two aces. Stecher led the Vikings with 13.5 points adding to the total 57 AU had on the night. 

On the defensive side, Bute reigned in 24 digs with a perfect 1.000 reception on the night while adding on an ace of her own. Kriener and Hohenhaus added a solo block apiece protecting the Vikings side of the net.
