SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Augustana Volleyball team fell to the No. 3 Wildcats of Wayne State in three sets (25-20, 25-12, 25-19) on Tuesday evening in Wayne, Nebraska.
The Vikings move to a 16-8 record on the season and are 8-8 in NSIC play. The Wildcats move to a 25-1 record and are 15-1 in the loop.
Augustana was firing on all cylinders in set one hammering home 15 kills compared to the Wildcats 11. The Vikings opened the set with a kill from sophomore Jolie Stecher setting up momentum for the Vikings. AU took off early with a 9-5 lead until the Wildcats crawled back to stay on the Vikings. After a tie at 13 Wayne State went on a late 4-0 run to steal the lead. A final fatal attack error from Augustana led Wayne State to take set one.
The Wildcats changed the momentum by taking off with an early lead in set two. Wayne State took advantage of early Viking attack errors to extend the lead and pull away. The Vikings were able to hold off the Wildcats achieving three blocks over the Wildcats zero blocks in set two. A final kill by the Wildcats Taya Beller sent Wayne State home with its second set win of the night.
The Vikings came back for more in set three opening the set with a monster kill by senior Kate Reimann to set the tone. A mid-set 5-0 run by the Wildcats pulled Wayne State in front with the lead of the final set. A late 3-0 run by Augustana held off the Wildcats match point until a final Wayne State kill gave the third, and final, set to the Wildcats.
Overall, the Vikings accumulated 38 kills and seven blocks compared to the Wildcats 39 kills and seven total blocks. The Vikings were led by senior Maddy Guetter with 11 kills, three blocks and 13.5 points. Following behind Guetter was senior Kia Kriener with 10 kills, two blocks and 12 points.
The Viking defense was led by senior Erika Bute with 20 digs and Stecher with four total blocks.
