Augustana Men’s Tennis Splits Saturday Matches

ST PETER, Minn. – The Augustana men's tennis team split a day of matches in St Peter, Minnesota, at the Swanson Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings started the day besting Bethel 6-1 and falling to the host team, Gustavus Adolphus, 5-2.

Augustana moves to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in the MIAA.

Augustana 6, Bethel 1

The Vikings started the day claiming the doubles point winning two of three contests. Joseph Plachy and Henry Dornbusch won No. 1 doubles by way of 6-2. Tyson Cowger and Tory Shafer produced the same score in No. 3 doubles.

Augustana had five winners in singles play with Justin Karcher securing a double-bagel in No. 2 singles. Cowger also produced a double-bagel in No. 6 singles.

Both Dornbusch in No. 1 singles and Nicholas LaPoint in No. 3 singles won in 6-2, 6-2 fashion.  

Plachy took home No. 4 singles besting his opponent 6-3, 6-1.

Gustavus Adolphus 5, Augustana 2

Nicholas LaPoint and Joseph Plachy won No. 2 doubles in 6-4 fashion. However, the Vikings lost the other two doubles contests, losing the doubles point.

Augustana had two victories in singles action, with Henry Dornbusch claiming his second victory of the day, winning 6-4, 4-6 and the tie-break 12-10. 

Justin Karcher also had a hard-fought battle to get the win in tie-break fashion at No. 2 singles by way of 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.

The Vikings have a busy week with three matches from Feb. 25-27. On Friday, The Vikings host Doane at GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletic Club slated for a 7 p.m. start. The Vikings then travel to Owatonna, Minnesota, to face Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday, then to Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday for a contest against Iowa Central Community College at 4 p.m.
