No. 16 Viking Women’s Tennis Defeats Nebraska-Kearney, 4-2

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 16 Augustana women's tennis battled into the night against a tough Nebraska-Kearney team, coming away with the victory in 4-2 fashion inside GreatLIFE Woodlake Athletics club just before midnight on Friday.

The women remain undefeated with a perfect 5-0 start to the season while Nebraska-Kearney moves to 5-2.

"This was an excellent match by our women," head coach Marc Kurtz said. "We came out strong in doubles and getting the doubles point was very important."

The Vikings kept the undefeated streak alive in doubles play, as all three teams came away victorious. Although it was some of the most competitive tennis played this season.

Both No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles were won by a score of 6-2, with Valeriya Monko and Florentia Hadjigeorgiou playing in the No. 1 position while Laura Arce Vieyra and Gabriela Jancikova played in the No. 2 slot.

Emily Granson and Aleksandra Kistanova fought hard to win No. 3 doubles, ultimately coming away with the win in 6-4 fashion.

"We had some momentum after doubles and we carried that over into our singles play," Kurtz said. "I'm just really proud of the team. We had adversity in every match and the team stayed positive and focused. We were able to come out with the win."

Hadjigeorgiou started off singles play with a win in the No. 2 position going 6-3, 6-2.

Kistanova was the next Viking to win in singles play, taking the No. 4 slot by way of 6-2, 6-4.

Arce Vieyra put the exclamation point on the match after winning a hard-fought battle in No. 3 singles, going 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 to make it 4-2 in favor of the Vikings.

Due to the lateness of the match, No. 6 singles went unfinished with Jancikova being ahead 3-0.

"It was nice to get this big regional win," Kurtz added. "Now we need to regroup and be ready because we have a very quick turnaround and have two more conference matches this weekend."
