No. 16 Women’s Tennis Sweeps Emporia State and Newman

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 16 Augustana women's tennis team opened the season with a weekend of victories over Central Region opponents. On Saturday, the Vikings defeated Emporia State in 7-0 fashion. Augustana kept the same momentum into Sunday's match against Newman, also winning 7-0.

The Vikings earned the doubles point by sweeping the matches. Valeriya Monko and Florentia Hadjigeorgiou combined for a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles while Laura Arce Vieyra and Gabriela Jancikova claimed No. 2 doubles 6-1. At No. 3 doubles, Aleksandra Kistanova and Emily Granson prevailed 6-1.

The Vikings went undefeated in singles play, with Monko winning the top flight in 6-0, 6-3 fashion. 

NSIC Preseason Player of the Year, Janikova, had her first collegiate win at No. 6 singles by way of a 6-1, 6-1 score.

Also claiming victories were Hadjigeorgiou (6-1, 6-0), Arce Vieyra (6-3, 6-4), Margarita Choulaira (6-0, 6-4) and Kistanova (6-0, 6-1).

Augustana 7, Newman 0

The No. 16 Viking women continued a strong start to the spring season besting Newman 7-0. The Vikings swept singles play with Monko and Choulaira both winning No. 1 and No. 4 singles winning 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Hadjigeorgiou won 6-4, 6-1, while Arce Vieyra prevailed 6-1, 6-5. The other two singles players were Kistanova at No. 5 and Janikova at No. 6. Kistanova won 6-3, 6-2, and Janikova 6-4, 6-2. 

Augustana claimed the doubles point winning No. 1 and No. 3 doubles with Monko and Hadjigeorgiou winning in 6-4 fashion, while Kistanova and Granson won 6-2.

Up Next

The Vikings open up NSIC play by traveling to Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday. Friday's match against Minnesota Duluth is slated for a 6 p.m. start while the contest against St. Cloud State will take place at 9 a.m.
