No. 23 Vikings Fall to the Peacocks Saturday Afternoon

FAYETTE, IOWA – The No. 23 Augustana volleyball team falls to the Peacocks of Upper Iowa in four sets on Saturday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.

The Vikings were defeated 17-25, 19-25, 25-19,13-25 against the Peacocks. Augustana moves to a 10-2 record and is 2-2 in NSIC play. Upper Iowa is now 7-4 overall and 1-3 in the loop.

The Peacocks secured set one, overpowering the Vikings at the net hitting .189 over Augustana's .057. A mid set 7-3 run by the Vikings caught Augustana up within one but a 5-0 run by the Peacocks gave them the advantage. Attack errors were the Vikings demise in the first set. A final kill from Madelyn Rettler gave the Peacocks their first set win of the match.

Set two was a back-and-forth scoring brawl until Upper Iowa pulled away late. A hot kill from the left side from senior Maddy Guetter sparked momentum in the Vikings leading them to a 5-1 run and their first lead of the set. The Peacocks responded back with a final 10-2 run to steal back their second set win.

The Vikings came back to battle in set three with clutch kills from Guetter and senior Kia Kriener to give Augustana the edge. Augustana opened set three with a 7-1 run with the help of Peacock attack errors and the Vikings dominance at the net. A strong right side kill by senior Kate Reimann set the tone for a Vikings mid-set 5-0 run where they ran away with the lead. A final service error reigned home Augustana's first set win of the match.

The Vikings came out swinging with a powered up kill from Reimann to open up the fourth set. Taking turns scoring, the teams were neck-and-neck until Upper Iowa took hold of set four coming out of a mid-set timeout. With a final 14-1 run, the Peacocks secured the lead and the match.

Overall, the Vikings were led by Reiman with 11 kills and 11 points. Senior Avery Thorson led with 26 assists and one ace, accompanied by senior Erika Bute with one ace and 20 digs.
