Augustana Wrestling Splits Against Mercyhurst, Colorado Mesa at NWCA National Duals

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Augustana wrestling defeated No. 18 Mercyhurst in its first dual of the day before falling short to No. 16 Colorado Mesa in the final dual at the NWCA National Duals on Saturday. The Vikings move to 5-6 on the season and head back into dual action this week.

Augustana 22, No. 18 Mercyhurst 18
Jaxson Rohman pushed the Vikings to an early lead, picking up a 13-4 major decision victory and earning four team points for the Vikings. Rohman tallied six takedowns and added a point for riding time in the matchup. 

Competing at 149 pounds, Connor Simmonds captured the win over his MU opponent with a fall at 5:55. He recorded one takedown and earned two escape points in the match prior to the pin. Simmonds' contributed six team points to put the Vikings up 10-9 over Mercyhurst.

At 157 pounds, Miles Fitzgerald earned a victory by way of a 6-3 decision. Fitzgerald logged two takedowns and earned two penalty points that pushed his score over his Laker opponent.

Tyler Wagener, competing at 165 pounds, defeated his Mercyhurst opponent early into the match with a fall at 1:02. Prior to the fall, Wagener totaled one takedown seconds into the contest. 

Augustana's 19-12 lead was increased by three points after Cade Mueller captured the 6-2 decision victory at 184 pounds. Mueller used two takedowns, an escape and a point for riding time to cruise to the win. 

No. 16 Colorado Mesa 20, Augustana 19
The Vikings fell short by just one point in the final dual of the NWCA National Duals. Augustana totaled five wins in the contest.

Kade Sammons defeated his CMU opponent with a takedown in overtime at 141 pounds. Sammons tallied one takedown and earned two escape points before adding another takedown in overtime.

Simmonds captured his second win of the day by way of a 16-1 technical fall. His points were generated from three takedowns, a reversal, one four-point nearfall and two two-point nearfalls. 

Wagener, competing at 165 pounds,  produced his second victory of the day with a 17-0 technical fall over his Maverick opponent. Wagener's points came from two takedowns and three four-point nearfalls. 

A takedown in the last minute of the third period was what Kolby Kost (174 pounds) needed to get another win for Augustana. Kost totaled three takedowns and an escape to push the Vikings into a 15-11 lead.

Mueller generated another win on the day with a 12-1 major decision victory against his CMU opponent. Mueller recorded two takedowns, a reversal, one four-point nearfall and one two-point nearfall in the match.
