FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Augustana Viking Hockey moved to 6-8-2 after securing an overtime win over Alaska Fairbanks (9-6-1) Saturday night by a score of 3-2. A trio of firsts happened as
Colton Friesen and
Shay Donovan collected first-career goals while
Kayden Hargraves tallied his first collegiate win in his first ever start.
The first period opened up with a powerful offensive effort from the Nanooks as they recorded 13 shots on goal to the Vikings three. Hargreaves stood tall throughout the opening 20 minutes of play, as he denied a strong power play opportunity from UAF.
Augustana battled back in the second period as it recorded eight shots on goal and overwhelmed the Nanooks while on the penalty kill.
The third period opened up the floodgates as Friesen opened the scoring with a shot from the slot off a backhanded pass from
Ryan Naumovski. UAF bounced back with two goals of its own to gain the lead for the first time in the night.
In an effort to even the game, assistant coach
Taylor Nelson pulled Hargraves to gain the extra attacker with just over two-minutes remaining. The late-game move flipped the switch as Augustana worked the puck around the offensive zone before finding
Evan McIntyre who powered in his second goal of the season to tie the game and force overtime.
Less than a minute into overtime,
Shay Donovan worked the puck away from a Nonooks defender and found open space to wire in the game-winner and seal the Vikings win.
