SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana hockey closed its weekend series against Long Island University on Saturday night as the Vikings fell to the Sharks, 3-2 inside Midco Arena.
Owen Bohn and
Luke Mobley recorded goals in the third period for Augustana.
Long Island got an early lead with goals in the first and second frames. Bohn closed the gap early in the third period but the Sharks piled on another goal six minutes later. The Vikings pulled the goalie with just under three minutes to play in the game and found success as Mobley ripped in a shot to bring Augustana to within one. Long Island held on to secure the weekend split with the Vikings.
In a physical first period, both programs exchanged a handful of shots to take an early lead. With 2:45 remaining on the clock, LIU recorded the first goal of the game after a scrum in front of the crease.
Long Island carried its momentum into the second period with a goal three minutes into the frame.
LIU pushed its lead to three with a quick goal in the third period but had the goal called back after an Augustana challenge for goaltender interference. After a successful challenge, momentum changed in Augustana's favor with a goal from Bohn. The sophomore forward drove the net after a
Joey DelGreco shot from the point and pushed the rubber past the Sharks netminder.
11:32 remained in the final frame before Long Island fired in its third goal of the game off the faceoff dot. In a final attempt to close the gap, Augustana pulled
Josh Kotai to bring on the extra attacker. With 1:21 left on the clock, Mobley slotted in the rubber off a pass from
Brett Meerman. The Sharks netminder held strong in the remaining minute of play to secure Long Island's first win of the season.
