MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Augustana women's basketball team closed their weekend with a 73-67 loss to MSU Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The Vikings moved to 7-17 overall and 6-14 in the NSIC while the Dragons jumped to 11-14, 11-9.
Aby Phipps led all scorers with 21 points and led the Vikings with six assists.
Michaela Jewett scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, while
Lauren Sees had 12 points and eight boards.
Jennifer Aadland tallied nine points and seven rebounds.
The Dragons opened the game with a 19-2 run before five Jewett points and five Sees points led a 10-2 run to end the quarter and bring the Vikings within 21-12 into the second.
Payton Hardy started a run with a jumper after the Dragons inched ahead by 11. Jewett knocked home a 3-pointer and Phipps knocked in a long 2-pointer to bring the Vikings within 27-23 with 7:02 left in the half.
Points would trade back and forth, with MSUM regrowing their lead to seven at 32-25 with 4:21 left before the break. Just eight points would be scored before the half, with six going to AU. Jewett and Phipps each scored two, and after MSUM hit a layup,
Johanna Miller knocked down a mid-range jumper as time expired to cut their halftime deficit to 34-31.
After falling behind by five early in the second half, the Vikings charged back as five Phipps points contributed to an 11-2 run, giving AU its first lead of the game at 44-40 with 3:39 left in the third. The Dragons reclaimed a lead with an 8-2 run, but an Aadland 3-pointer put the Vikings back in front 49-48 with just over a minute left.
Starting with a pair of baskets to end the third quarter, the teams split 18 points to keep AU ahead by one with 5:39 to go in the game. The Dragons went back in front with the next three points.
From there, the shot-making increased as eight straight possessions ended in points. That run was capped with a 3-pointer from Sees to tie the game at 67-67 with 2:32 remaining. MSUM scored the final six points of the game in the last 2:32 to give them the victory.
The Vikings conclude the regular season next weekend, starting with a Friday night match-up against Northern State. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
