Viking Softball Closes Mardi Gras Invitational with 7-2 Win over SE

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The Augustana softball team quickly added a pair of games to make up for the contests lost Saturday in Youngsville, Louisiana. The Vikings concluded the Mardi Gras Invitational with a 7-2 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State. Earlier in the day, AU fell 1-0 to No. 24 Mississippi College.

Augustana sits at 3-3 on the young season while Mississippi College holds a record of 4-0. Southeastern Oklahoma State is 1-3.

Game One: No. 24 Mississippi College 1, Augustana 0
A sacrifice fly in the third inning was the only offense in the game, which went the direction of Mississippi College. In the inning, MC singled into left field then advanced on an error to third base. That set up Emily Rigney for the sacrifice fly.

Grace Glanzer, Augustana's starting pitcher, tossed the complete game by giving up just four hits while striking out six. The lone blemish was the unearned run in the third inning.

In a nod to the Choctaws pitcher, Madison Jenkins tossed all seven innings, striking out five and walking four, but did not allow a hit.

Game Two: Augustana 7, Southeastern Oklahoma State 2
Augustana's bats came alive for a season-best nine hits enroute to scoring the seven runs in the 7-2 victory.

AU initially fell behind 1-0 in the top of the second inning, but plated four runs in the bottom half to claim the lead and not relinquish it for the remainder of the contest.

To open the bottom of the second, Kennedy Buckman drew a walk and advanced to third on an Ashton Dorman double. Buckman then touched home plate on a Nicole Bellis sacrifice fly.

Dorman gave the Vikings the lead at 2-1 as Sydney Herbert was the beneficiary of an error to reach base. Herbert was plated on a single by Liz Dierks, boosting Augustana's advantage to 3-1. The final run of the inning came courtesy of Dierks as she touched home plate on a passed ball.

The Vikings' lead grew to 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth as Gracey Brink singled in Dierks and Bellis, who had each reached base on a single.

The next batter, Grace Glanzer, singled through the right side to score Andrea Cain for a commanding 7-1 lead.

Southeastern Oklahoma plated a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final score of 7-2.

Hailey Houston got the start for Augustana, tossing three innings and giving up a pair of hits. Ella Cooper pitched the final four innings to earn the victory by giving up three hits and striking out three.

Dierks went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead AU with the remaining six hits came from six different spots in the batting order.
