Aadland Double-Double Not Enough in Women’s Hoops Loss at Winona State

WINONA, Minn. – The Augustana women's basketball team made a strong comeback attempt in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell 64-52 to Winona State Friday night in Winona, Minnesota.

Jennifer Aadland recorded the double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds while Lauren Sees dropped in 11 points.

The Vikings (7-16, 6-12 NSIC) opened the night with a 7-3 lead as Sees scored five points in the first two minutes to get going.

After a WSU 3-pointer, Aby Phipps made a layup before Aadland knocked down a corner three to extend the lead to 12-6 with 6:22 to play.

After cutting the AU lead to five, the Warriors (6-15, 5-12 NSIC) stormed in front with an 11-0 run to lead 20-14 with 49 seconds remaining. In the final Viking possession of the quarter, Kelsey Willems knocked down a three that cut the AU deficit in half heading into the second quarter.

Augustana had a tough go in the second quarter, being outscored 18-6 in the frame but bounced back in the third quarter after trailing 38-23 at halftime. The Vikings pulled within nine points with 5:36 to go in the third quarter on an Aadland 3-pointer. That made the score 41-32.

The Warriors then rebuilt their lead but Augustana outscored the home team by one in the quarter to enter the fourth quarter trailing 54-40.

The Vikings came out firing in the final quarter, starting with a trey from Sees. After a layup by Emma Carpenter of WSU, the Vikings scored five-straight points with a 3-point basket from the hands of Aadland then a long-range shot from Izzy Moore. That made the score 56-49 with 6:55 remaining.

The seven point gap was the smallest the score would get as both squads hit a scoring drought for the next four-plus minutes. Winona State sank a few shots down the stretch with the final score settling at 64-52.

The Vikings close their weekend on Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minnesota, taking on Minnesota State at 3:30 p.m.
