SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -
Jack Hines went 6 for 7 to help lead the Augustana baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota Duluth on Thursday afternoon at Ronken Field.
The Vikings move to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in the NSIC, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-11, 4-6.
Game One: No. 20 Augustana 6, Minnesota Duluth 4
Max Mosser and Hines each collected a pair of hits, while Hines and Mooney drove in a pair apiece to help the Vikings earn a game one victory.
Caleb Saari earned the victory, stringing out four in 6 1/3 innings to move to 3-1 on the season.
The Vikings struck first with a four-run first inning. Mosser opened the inning with a single and got to second on a
Drey Dirksen walk. Each runner advanced a pair of bases on a failed pickoff attempt, scoring Mosser.
Hines did his damage from there, shooting a two-run home run that wrapped around the right field pole to extend the lead.
Jason Axelberg followed with a walk, and Kolbeck sliced a double to right-center to score Axelberg and finish off the inning.
The Vikings took a 5-0 lead in the second, starting with singles from
Trevor Winterstein and Mosser. Winterstein reached third on the Mosser single and scored one batter later when
Parker Mooney reached on a fielder's choice.
The play of the game came in the top of the fourth inning when
Trevor Winterstein took a home run away from the Bulldogs, reaching over the left field fence for the robbery.
After a UMD run, the Vikings scored another.
Nick Banowetz reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the fourth and then stole second base after an out. With two outs, Mooney drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single to give the Vikings a 6-1 lead.
The Bulldogs threatened in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but
Adam Diedrich closed out his third save of the season with a flyout to cut off the rally.
Game Two: No. 20 Augustana 7, Minnesota Duluth 4
Hines continued his monster day at the plate in game two, going 4 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. He was the only batter with a multi-hit game as six other Vikings each collected a hit.
Ashton Michek broke the program record for career pickoffs, recording his 11th in the top of the first inning. He earned a no decision after allowing four hits and a run in six innings of work while striking out six.
Will Henry allowed two hits and struck out a pair in the final 2 1/3 innings to earn his first career win.
Again, the Vikings scored first, this time in the second inning. Hines sent a leadoff double to right-center to open the frame and Kolbeck drove him home with an RBI groundout.
UMD knotted the score with an RBI single in the fourth but the Vikings reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning. Dirksen reached on an error to lead off the inning and reached third on a Hines single. Axelberg brought Dirksen home with a ground out to second base to put AU in front 2-1.
The Vikings added two more in the fifth inning.
Sam Siegel reached on a single and
Ryan Clementi hit a two-out double to put them both in scoring position. Dirksen delivered in the clutch, pounding a double to left to grow the lead to 4-1.
UMD evened the scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Mosser singled and Clementi walked to open the bottom of the seventh, and Mosser later advanced to third on a flyout. Hines broke the tie with a single to center and error that scored them both, and he later scored on a two-out single from Kolbeck to give AU a 7-4 lead that would hold to the finish.
The Vikings and Bulldogs will close the series with a doubleheader at Creighton Prep in Omaha, Nebraska starting at 1:30 p.m., on Friday afternoon.
