DUNDAS, Minn. - The Augustana softball team split an NSIC doubleheader against MSU Moorhead on Saturday afternoon inside the Dundas Dome.
The Vikings move to 18-13 overalls and 3-1 in the NSIC, while the Dragons go to 16-10, 3-1.
Game One: Augustana 4, MSU Moorhead 0
Grace Glanzer tossed a gem to help the Vikings to a game one victory. Glanzer allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out nine in the complete game victory.
The offense scattered 12 hits in the win, with
Kennedy Buckman,
Gracey Brink, and
Stella Harber each recording multi-hit games. Buckman tallied a pair of RBI while Harber scored a pair of runs.
Andrea Cain opened the scoring with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning. After an out, Buckman slammed a solo-shot of her own to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.
A Harber single to lead off the second inning helped with run production as she reached second on an error before scoring on a Buckman two-out single to push AU to a 3-0 advantage.
Again in the fourth, a Harber lead off single helped give the offense a jolt.
Liz Dierks moved her into scoring position with a bunt single, Cain moved her to third with a flyout, and
Desi Cuevas reached on a fielder's choice to help bring Harber home and round out the scoring.
Four runs was plenty for Glanzer to work with as she allowed just two base runners in the final three innings to secure the win.
Game Two: MSU Moorhead 5, Augustana 4
The Vikings added 11 hits in game two, but saw a comeback bid fall just short. Harber recorded another two hit game, with Cuevas,
Torri Chute, and
Ashton Dorman joining her with two apiece.
The Vikings fell behind 1-0 in the second before finding the scoreboard in the third. Cuevas spun a one-out double down the left field line and Chute drove her home with a two-out double to the left-center gap to tie the game at 1-1.
AU kept the pressure on in the fourth with a lead-off double from Dorman and used a
Nicole Bellis walk to get a pair on with nobody out. Harber caused chaos with a ground ball to second, allowing the Dragons to get a force at second before throwing it away on the double play attempt, bringing home Dorman and giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
The defense made a tremendous impact in the fifth to keep the Vikings in front. First, Harber made a beautiful backhand play and throw for the first out of the inning. With two outs and a runner on first, Buckman made a diving stop up the middle, flipping it to Harber at second and recording the forceout.
The Dragons fired back in the sixth inning with three runs and added another in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead. Dorman refused to go away quietly, slugging a one-out, two-run home run to center and bringing the Vikings within one, but the Dragons recorded the final two outs without allowing another to come away victorious.
