SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The No. 17 Augustana baseball team broke a program record with its 16th straight victory, knocking off Concordia-St. Paul 14-3 on Sunday afternoon at Ronken Field. It is the third consecutive weekend sweep for the Vikings.
AU moves its season record to 33-6 and 24-4 in the NSIC while CSP falls to 21-18, 13-17.
The Vikings scattered 15 hits on the day with six guys recording a multi-hit game.
Jack Hines went 2 for 4 with 2 runs, three RBI, and tied a program record with his 17th home run of the season.
Also adding a pair of hits and 3 RBI was
Joe Kolbeck.
Drey Dirksen went 2 for 4 with a double, home run, two RBI and two runs scored, and
Parker Mooney went 2 for 3 with a double, home run, and two runs scored.
After allowing two first inning runs,
Mariano Gomez settled in while earning the victory on the mound. Gomez went five innings and allowed just an unearned run in his final four innings of action while striking out seven.
Kai Taylor and
Caleb Kranz each threw an inning of relief, striking out two apiece and did not allow a baserunner.
The Golden Bears struck for two in the first inning before a two-out rally in the second from the Vikings eliminated the CSP advantage.
Mooney lifted a double to left field to keep the inning alive, and
Max Mosser concluded a 10-pitch at bat with a bloop single to left, scoring Mooney and cutting the deficit in half.
Tate Meiners singled through the left side to get Mosser into scoring position and
Sam Siegel sent a single of his own through the right side, driving home Mosser and evening the score at 2-2.
The singles kept coming when Winterstein pulled one to the left side, scoring Meiners. Ater Winterstein stole second to put a pair in scoring position, Kolbeck completed the rally with a two run single to put AU in front 5-2.
A pair of solo shots off the bats of Dirksen and Mooney in the third grew the Viking lead to 7-2.
The train kept rolling in the fourth. With two outs, Hines took a 2-0 pitch to left center and Dirksen doubled to the left field corner to bring in Hines.
Luke Ballweg followed that up with a double of his own to score Dirksen and put the Vikings ahead 9-2.
The Vikings opened the fifth with three free passes, loading the bases with nobody out. Mosser and Meiners walked and Siegel was plunked.
After a strikeout,
Joe Kolbeck singled over the third baseman to score Mosser and Meiners. Hines delivered on the next pitch, sending a no-doubter to left to take a 14-2 advantage.
The Golden Bears scraped across an unearned run in the sixth before Taylor and Kranz silenced any chance at a comeback with six straight outs.
The Vikings will take on Southwest Minnesota State for an NSIC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch slated for 1:30 p.m.
