Vikings Drop Road Doubleheader

MANKATO, Minn. - The No. 14 Augustana baseball team saw its win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, dropping both games of a doubleheader to Minnesota State.

The Vikings drop to 35-8 overall and 26-6 in the NSIC while the Mavericks jump to 30-14, 25-8.

Game One: Minnesota State 7, Augustana 2
Trailing 2-0, the Mavericks scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the win.

The Vikings had six hits in the loss with Jason Axelberg having two hits, including a home run. Nick Banowetz, Drey Dirksen, Luke Ballweg and Max Mosser each recorded a hit and Jack Hines scored the second run of the game.

Ashton Michek allowed four runs and struck out seven in five innings of action after getting the nod to start the opener.

Axelberg made some noise in the second inning to open the scoring. After fouling off a bunt he was able to get ahold of one to left, knocking out his fifth home run of the season to give AU a 1-0 lead.

After a fielder's choice cut off a run and put Hines on second base with two outs int he top of the sixth, Dirksen parked one off the wall in left center, driving in Hines and closing the AU scoring.

Game Two: Minnesota State 14, Augustana 5
Tate Meiners had two of the five Viking hits in a lopsided defeat. He also had a home run and a pair of RBI, as did Hines. Those two were joined by Joe Kolbeck and Max Mosser for the Augustana hitters that collected a hit.

Mariano Gomez earned a no-decision after allowing five and striking out four in five innings to start.

MSU scored four in the first and one in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. The Vikings rallied for runs in the sixth, starting with Banowetz reaching on a one-out error and Kolbeck doubling him home.

Hines dug into the box after Kolbeck and inched AU even closer, hitting a blast to left to bring the Vikings within 5-3.

Dirksen followed with a walk that forced an MSU pitching change. On the first 'pen pitch of the game, Tate Meiners sent a no-doubter to left to tie the game at 5-5.

The Mavericks went on to score one in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim a lead and then added seven in the seventh and one in the eighth to close out the doubleheader sweep.

The teams will take a day off before meeting for a Monday afternoon game starting at 3 p.m.
