SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana baseball team outscored UMary 26-1 in a dominant doubleheader sweep on Friday afternoon at Ronken Field.
The Vikings move to 20-6 overall and 12-4 in the NSIC, while the Marauders fall to 11-15, 7-9.
Game One: Augustana 10, UMary 0
Nick Banowetz recorded three hits, drove in a pair, and stole three bases to lead an offense that distributed 13 hits and stole six bases.
Drey Dirksen went 2 for 2 with a pair of home runs, three RBI, and drew two walks, and
Joe Kolbeck had two hits of his own. The Vikings had hits from nine different players, including eight starters.
Caleb Saari struck out 10 and allowed just seven baserunners in a complete-game effort to help the Vikings to a series-opening victory.
Banowetz applied pressure on the bases from the beginning. He opened the bottom of the first with a single and stole second. He advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw, and scored on a single from
Jack Hines to give AU a 1-0 lead.
Hines went on to steal second and Dirksen walked to put the pair on. Kolbeck moved Hines over on a flyout for the second out, and the Vikings put on an early break play that allowed Hines to score while Dirksen was thrown out on the basepaths, putting AU in front 2-0.
A
Jason Axelberg single and
Ryan Clementi double with one out in the second inning put AU back in business, and a
Tate Meiners groundout allowed Axelberg to score and give the Vikings a third run.
The Vikings added two more in the bottom of the third inning.
Drey Dirksen hit his seventh home run of the season the other way and
Joe Kolbeck followed with a blast to left to grow the lead to 5-0.
With Saari on cruise control, the Vikings found the scoreboard again in the sixth. Axelberg was hit by a pitch, stole second, and Winterstein reached on an infield single to get a pair on the corners. Winterstein stole second to get both in scoring position and Banowetz drove them home with a two-run single.
Banowetz collected a steal of his own and later scored on a base knock from
Parker Mooney. After a Hines fielder's choice, Dirksen delivered the final blow with another opposite field home run to bring the game to its final score.
Saari capped off his masterpiece with a pair of strikeouts and a popout to seal the deal.
Game Two: Augustana 16, UMary 1
The Vikings added another 13 hits in game two, led by three hits on two home runs and a triple, three runs, and five RBI from
Jack Hines.
Max Mosser and
Trevor Winterstein each had a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored, and
Parker Mooney had a home run and five RBI while scoring two runs.
Ashton Michek followed Saari's masterpiece with one of his own, allowing a run on five hits and striking out 12 while completing the shortened game.
Hines opened the scoring in the first inning, slugging a two-out blast to right field to give AU a 1-0 advantage. Ballweg reached on a leadoff double to open the second inning and later came around following a Mosser single and UMary error to make it 2-0.
The game blew open in the fourth inning. Mosser singled, Siegel walked, and Winterstein bunted his way on to load the bases with an out. Banowetz scored one with a single, and Mooney brought everyone in with a grand slam. It was his fifth home run in the last six games and gave AU a 7-0 lead.
Hines kept the train rolling with a triple to center and Dirksen cleaned the bases with a sac fly to left, putting the Vikings in front 8-0.
In the fifth, the train kept chugging. Kolbeck drew a walk and Mosser was hit by a 2-0 pitch to get a pair on. Winterstein reached on a single to load the bases, and
Parker Mooney drew a bases loaded walk with two outs to score another run.
Three pitches later, Hines delivered another blow, bending the second AU grand slam in as many innings just around the right field foul pole to give the Vikings a 13-0 lead.
If there was any doubt in the Viking lead after a UMary solo shot in the top of the sixth, Siegel erased it. After Ballweg was hit by an 0-2 pitch and
Spencer Marenco singled, Siegel sent a no-doubter into the trees in right-center to finish the scoring.
Michek made quick work of the Marauders in the final inning, forcing a pair of groundouts on three pitches and collecting a backwards K to finish the run-rule shortened game.
The two teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday at Ronken Field, with first pitch slated for noon.
