WARRENSBURG, Mo. - The No. 9 Augustana baseball team kept its season alive on Saturday afternoon, knocking out Central Oklahoma 4-3 at Crane Stadium. The Vikings (47-9) will take on Central Missouri at 5:30 p.m., needing a win tonight and a win tomorrow afternoon to move onto the Super Regional.
Nick Banowetz went 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI in the leadoff spot while Ryan Clementi and Jack Hines had two hits apiece batting behind him in the order. Each provided an extra base hit, as did Tate Meiners.
Mariano Gomez got the start on the bump and held it together, striking out 10 and allowing three earned in 5 1/3 innings to move to 7-0 on the season. Will Henry was solid in relief, throwing the final 3 2/3 innings and allowing just two baserunners to earn his fourth save of the season.
Gomez set the tone in the first inning, striking out three to get out of a slight jam while stranding a pair on base. Banowetz and Clementi led off the bottom of the inning with singles to get the two on the corners.Hines lifted a sac fly for the first out of the inning, allowing Banowetz to score and give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
The Bronchos took a lead in the top of the third inning, striking for three runs on four hits. Clementi came up with a one-out double and Hines singled with one out in the bottom of the third to get runners on the corners. After a Hines stolen base and a strikeout, Meiners delivered a huge two-out, two-strike double to the right center gap, scoring both to tie the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Luke Ballweg fouled off a pair of pitches with two strikes before a single through the right side got him on base. He watched a pair of strikeouts from there before taking second on a dirtball read. That advancement paid dividends when Banowetz delivered a clutch two-out, two-strike liner to the left center gap, reaching third with an RBI triple to reclaim the lead at 4-3.
Central Oklahoma had a chance in the sixth inning to even the score after reaching on a one out double. Henry entered and shut them down from there, forcing a fly you and pop out to get out of the jam. They also reached scoring position with one out in the seventh but a ground out and fly out helped Henry get out of the final doozie of the day.
